Weekly Sponsor Highlight: Virginia Blood Services

Within one year of its 1974 founding at the direction of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, Richmond Metropolitan Blood Service - now Virginia Blood Services (VBS) - took Richmond from a haphazard system of paid and volunteer blood sources to an all volunteer blood supply.

"There is a homeless man who lives in an abandoned building near my job. He comes into the store I work at and just starts helping me clean the store. I try to give him what I can, i.e. food or cash. Today I gave him only $5.00 and because he was able to buy his lady friend who is also homeless a small belated Christmas gift he was so happy he smiled and showed me a mouth with no teeth after never seeing him smile. I had to cry later just to know that I made someone less fortunate than me so happy he smiled." ~ Maria
"Kept passing the sign at Memorial Sloan Kettering that said blood and platelet donors needed and finally acted on and donated a unit of blood. Eligible donors can donate blood about every 2 months!" ~ Lois
"I bought coffee at Starbucks for 4 Seattle police officers to say thank you for protecting and serving our community. Our communities have suffered such great losses of 6 officers in less than three months. I felt our officers needed to know that they were appreciated." ~ Kelsee
"I sorted through all of my possessions and donated a packed carful of goods to the local thrift store." ~ Emily

"I had about 40 new notebooks, school supplies and a box of toiletries items that I gave to a woman that is going to Haiti next month on a missions trip." ~ Jennifer
"I live in Fort Pierce FL where there is a lot of homeless on the street. There is a park downtown that many homeless go to every day. I wanted to bring Christmas to them so my son and I went to the park with a 1 foot Christmas tree, backpacks filled with MRE's, water, socks and toiletries. We also gave them wrapped Christmas gifts and baked goods. We helped about 22 homeless men."

"I went around my neighborhood and offered to take down and pack up people's outdoor Christmas decorations."
"My family recently went on vacation in Texas. My grandparents flew down to join us. My grandmother has Parkinson's Disease which makes it hard for her to move around. While we were on vacation, she needed lots of help. I helped her pick out her outfits, I folded her clothes, helped her use the restroom, got her meals and helped her get her medicine, to name a few. She said it blessed her in so many ways, and it blessed me to help her. :) "
